Ljubljana, the chess city
Ljubljana has a long and rich chess tradition. For many years, the traditional international Ljubljana Open was organized in Ljubljana, which unfortunately stopped in 2009.
Already in 2013, chess player Darja Kapš recognized the potential of the Slovenian capital for organizing interesting chess tournaments. Together with her colleague Indira Bajt, they organized the first Ljubljana Chess Festival in March 2014. A one-day chess festival with a rich monetary fund (11,000 euros), an interesting cultural program and distinguished guests attracted 250 chess players from all over Europe and set further standards for the organization.
With the establishment of the Ljubljana Chess Club at the end of 2015, the capital city got a new chess impetus. Every year (with the exception of the pandemic period), an interesting one-day chess spectacle takes place in the capital.
